Historic Plaque Ceremony Slated for Former Elrod’s Jewelry Store

Toccoa Main Street is set to hang yet another historical plaque in the downtown area.

This time it’s at the Elrod’s Jewelry store building on Pond Street.

The Elrod Jewelry plaque is third in the 2018 – 2019 series, which is dedicated to downtown buildings and will be unveiled on Thursday, at 5 p.m.

Main Street Manager Christian Hamilton says Elrod’s Jewelry has a long history in Toccoa.

“His first business in Toccoa was actually in 1953 in the back of Deluxe Tire in downtown Toccoa on the corner of Doyle and Pond St.,” Hamilton said. “Elrod’s Jewelry opened in 1964 and operated out of the back of a taxi stand just a street away. He then built the building in 1968. So quite a lot of history there.”

The Elrod Jewelry building is known for its typical circa-1960s Commercial design, featuring a metal awning, simple brickwork, and plain windows.

And since its construction 50 years ago, the building has not received any extensive façade changes.

The public is invited to attend the plaque hanging ceremony Thursday.

Again, it will take place in front of the former Elrod’s Jewelry store building Thursday at 5p and the public is invited to attend.

The historic plaque program highlights historic buildings in Toccoa, and the remaining plaques are set to follow each month. Once all plaques have been installed, they will be added to Main Street Toccoa’s Historic Walking Tour Guide.
