Body of man found dead in Toccoa fire has been identified

Officials have released the identity of the man found dead inside a Toccoa residence that caught on fire earlier this month.

The body of 60-year-old Jeffrey Lee Gray, of Toccoa was found inside the residence on August 8.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, initially his officers were dispatched to East Currahee Street for a property retrieval; however, while enroute, officers received reports of a fire at the same residence.

Once officers arrived, they were unable to make entry into the home due to the doors being nailed shut from the inside.

When Toccoa Fire arrived, they were able to gain access into the house where they extinguished the fire.

Mize tells WNEG News that the body was discovered inside the residence after the fire was extinguished.

The Toccoa Police Department, State Fire Marshalls Office and Stephens County Coroner’s Office investigated the house fire.

Based on evidence at the scene the death has been ruled a suicide.
