Board of Education Public Hearings, Meetings Scheduled for Today, Thursday

Regarding the Stephens County Board of Education Schedule, as previously reported by WNEG News during the July 11 news cycle, the Board will meet tonight, July 16, for a regularly scheduled meeting at 5:30 p.m. Items on the agenda include consideration of meal pricing and bids as presented by the nutrition director and consideration of a Construction Manager At Risk, a Memorandum of Understanding with Camp Toccoa, and an SRO or school resource officer Memorandum of Understanding.

At 6 p.m., the Board will hold a public hearing regarding the proposed millage rate of 14.76 mils, which is 4.87 percent above the rollback rate. 

On Thursday, July 18, at 7:30 a.m., the Board will hold the final public hearing on the millage rate. In a called meeting of the Board at 7:45 a.m., immediately following the public hearing, the Board will vote on acceptance of the millage rate as proposed. That vote is the only item on the agenda for the called meeting. 

According to the legal notice provided by the School District, the proposed millage rate of 14.76 mills will result in an increase of 4.87 percent in property taxes levied and is a 0.69 mills increase above the rollback rate of 14.07 mills. 

The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $125,000 is approximately $33.12 and the proposed tax increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $75,000 is approximately $20.70.
