Indians Defeat Falcons, 27-11
Stephens County grounds the Falcons at home in non-region football play.
The Indians jumped out early and built their lead throughout, winning 27-11 at home over Flowery Branch, a top 10 team in Class 5A.
Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said the Indians stepped up and played a strong game tonight.
“We made a lot of improvement this week over the last couple of weeks,” said Tankersley. “I think we have a good squad, but we still have room for improvement. This was a good win for us. We just have to keep working and keep getting better each week.”
Flowery Branch struck first in the opening quarter on a 27-yard field goal from Marcos Velazquez to take a 3-0 lead. The Indians took the lead on a short Ben Stowe touchdown run, making it 7-3 after one quarter of play.
Stephens County extended its lead to 14-3 in the second quarter on a 29-yard touchdown run from Javin Gordon. The Indians kept the momentum on the opening kickoff of the second half as Cam Lacy returned it about 99 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-3, Indians.
The Falcons cut it to 21-11 on a 27-yard touchdown run by Brody Jordan with a two-point conversion. Javin Gordon’s second touchdown run, this one from two yards, made it 27-11 in favor of Stephens County after three quarters.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, as the Indian defense stepped up with a fourth down stop on one possession and then an Isaac DeFoor interception on Flowery Branch’s final possession of the game.
The Indians move to 2-1 on the season with the win, while the Falcons fall to 2-1 after the loss. This coming week, Stephens County travels to take on Dawson County. Kick-off in Dawsonville on Friday is 7:30 p.m. with coverage on WNEG starting at 6:30 p.m. with the Indian Road Show.
