Indians Beat Habersham Central, 14-3
Stephens County comes from behind in the second half to again win the Battle of Currahee Mountain in the opening game of the 2022 football season.
Two second-half touchdowns propelled the Indians to a 14-3 victory over Habersham Central at home at the Reservation in Toccoa on Friday night.
Indians’ Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said he is proud of the way the team fought back.
“Throughout the whole game, we moved the ball up and down the field and dominated, but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” he said. “That’s first game stuff. We have some new guys, but they all fought and refused to lose tonight. The seniors, you could tell, weren’t going to lose this game.”
A low-scoring first half saw the Raiders take a 3-0 lead into the locker room on the strength of a 37-yard field goal by Michael Hall.
The game stayed at 3-0 until late in the third quarter when the Indians took the lead on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Ben Stowe to Cam Lacy.
Leading 7-3 with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Javin Gordon took a handoff and scored on a 36-yard touchdown run to seal the 14-3 win for Stephens County.
With the win, the Indians move to 1-0 on the year and Habersham Central falls to 0-1.
Next week, Habersham Central will host White County. Meanwhile, Stephens County will travel to Tiger to take on the Rabun County Wildcats in another non-region game. Kickoff next Friday night is set for 7:30 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the Indian Road Show.
