Lady Indians Win Thriller, Boys Fall to Madison Co.

The Stephens County Lady Indian basketball team stands alone at the top of Region 8-AAAA after a thrilling, come from behind win over Madison County.

Down by as many as nine points, the Lady Indians withstood 63 points from Madison County star Kayla McPherson and held on to win 81-79 in Danielsville on Friday night.

The Lady Indians took the lead for good with a minute to go on a three-pointer from Lindsay Moore and McPherson missed a half court shot at the buzzer for the win.

Na Na Eades led the Lady Indians with 20 points, including several clutch free throws in the final minutes. All five starters scored in double figures for the Lady Indians, as Renajah Verdell scored 19 points, Moore had 18, Kiki Howard had 13 and Savanna Broska chipped in 11 points.

With the win and the regular season sweep of Madison County, Stephens County’s girls move to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the region, alone in first place. The Lady Red Raiders fall to 13-9 overall and 3-2 in region play.

In the boys’ game, Madison County jumped out early and withstood a late Indian run to win, 73-59.

Down by as many as 29 points in the third quarter, the Indians cut it to 12 in the final minutes, but could get no closer as the Red Raiders picked up the region win.

Roderick Jones and Nolan Hill each had 19 points to lead Madison County, and Adam Metts added 16 points.

Kenny Colwell had 18 points on six three-pointers to lead the Indians, while Chris Sinclair added 16 points and Dominic Forbes chipped in with 12.

With the loss, the Stephens County boys drop to 7-14 overall and 1-4 in region play, while the Madison County boys move to 6-16 overall and 3-2 in the region.

Stephens County heads to Atlanta on Tuesday for a region showdown with St. Pius. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Air time on WNEG and wnegradio.com is set for 5:45 p.m.
