Toccoa woman indicted for vehicular homicide

A Toccoa woman was indicted for one count of first-degree vehicular homicide.

A grand jury handed down the indictment earlier this week in Stephens County Superior Court.

According to the indictment, Amanda Renee Combs, 27, of Toccoa was responsible for the fatal accident that occurred October 28, 2018.

At the time of the incident, troopers with the Georgia State Patrol responded to the accident on Ga. 17 Alternate.

According to the GSP’s report, Combs was driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Ga. 17, when she failed to negotiate a curve to the left and ran off the road to the right.

The vehicle traveled approximately 2017 feet before re-entering the roadway, then traveled across the southbound travel lane and exited the left shoulder of Ga. 17 Alternate near mile marker 8.

The jeep struck an embankment with its left front and traveled up the embankment before striking several trees.

The vehicle overturned and rolled down the embankment coming to a final rest on its roof facing north on the left shoulder of Ga. 17 Alternate.

GSP released that Combs passenger, James Apollo Spratt, died of injuries sustained in the wreck.

Neither occupant was wearing their seat belt.

The wreck was reported by a passerby just before 10 p.m.

Combs was indicted on the following charges: first-degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, failure to wear seat safety belt, reckless driving, open container, and failure to chance driver’s license address information.
