Georgia is sickest state in America

New flu data reveals that Georgia is the sickest state in America.

With 7 percent of Georgia’s population, an estimated 718,000 people, being sick with the flu.

The number of flu-related deaths in Georgia continues to rise.

Fifty-one people have died so far this season, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH).

Stephens County is not immune, according to Stephens County Hospital’s Infection Preventionist Terri Cheek, RN.

Cheek explained to WNEG News via email that the flu can be spread by microscopic droplets in the air, created by coughing, sneezing and talking.

Cheek urges anyone who may be infected to stay home, rather than risk infecting others.

St. Mary Sacred Heart Hospital’s spokesman Mark Ralston tells WNEG News the unusually high volume means patients with uncomplicated flu symptoms can expect long wait times if they DO decide to go to the ER.

For most patients, the flu can be managed with rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications.

But if you think you or a loved one needs medical attention, Ralston said you should first try to go to your primary care physician or an urgent care clinic instead of your local hospital ER.

According to Stephens County Hospital’s Dr. Jim Wade, the flu shot is about 30 percent effective this year; however, the flu shot does decrease your chance of getting infected and it does make the flu less severe.

It isn’t too late to get a flu shot.

Stephens County Hospital’s Internal Medicine is currently offering flu shots now.

Anyone who seeks out emergency care for flu-like symptoms from the hospital’s emergency department is encouraged to get a mask and sanitize your hands at the flu station in the waiting room.
