Old Jail Deemed Surplus

The Stephens County Commission declares the old Stephens County Jail as surplus property.

County commissioners unanimously passed a motion officially doing that at their meeting last Tuesday.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said the motion also authorizes staff to sell scrap from the demolition of the old jail on Scenic Drive and place the money from those sales in the county’s Capital Projects Fund.

Ayers said this is something that the county has been discussing for some time.

“If we have an odd weather situation, they can begin demolishing this and start on the inside,” said Ayers. “There are a lot of things that can be done so we want to get it formally on the books.”

Ayers did not give a timeline for the work to be done by the Public Works Department.
