Stephens Co. Commission to Meet Today

Stephens County Commissioners are expected to consider a request from County Extension Agent Forrest Connelly for additional funding from the county government for the 4-H program at their meeting later today.

The county commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the second floor courtroom of the historic Stephens County Courthouse in downtown Toccoa.

Commissioners are expected to consider a request from Connelly to add $2,700 annually to help make up 4-H funding cut by the Stephens County school system earlier this year.

Last month, the Stephens County Board of Education voted to reduce its contribution to the county’s 4-H program from just under $20,000 a year to about $6,000 a year in what school officials called a budget reduction measure.

Connelly’s request was scheduled for the Stephens County Commission meeting two weeks ago, but was tabled because Connelly could not be at the meeting.

Also on today’s county commission agenda is the consideration of a motion to change the operation of recyclable items at the Stephens County convenience sites such that citizens who want to recycle drop off their recyclable items at the city of Toccoa recycling center starting on April 15, as well as a motion to declare April 25 as an amnesty day for Keep Toccoa-Stephens County Beautiful to open the Stephens County Landfill for acceptance of normal operational items for residential only.

Stephens County Commissioners will start at 5:30 p.m. with a work session to discuss the agenda items.

The business meeting to vote on agenda items as needed will follow immediately after the conclusion of the work session.

Today’s Stephens County Commission meeting also allows time for public comment.
