‘Can Man’ Found Dead; No Foul Play Suspected

Authorities in Stephens County are investigating a death to ensure that no foul play was involved.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said that he was contacted earlier this week about a person who had not been seen.

“I was called by two different individuals about Winfred Kallenback,” said Shirley. “Most folks around Toccoa would know this man by the ‘can man.’ He picks up aluminum cans.”

According to the sheriff, nobody had seen him in a couple weeks.

Shirley said he sent deputies out to the house the next morning.

“They had to break into the house,” said Shirley. “They found him in the back bedroom.”

According to Shirley, there had been a fire that appears to have started from the refrigerator.

Shirley said that his office does not believe foul play to be involved, but is investigating the matter to make sure.

“There are a lot of rumors out there, especially on social media,” said Shirley. “It does not appear to be anything other than a tragic accident.”

Shirley said more would be known once the autopsy results are complete.
