Volleyball Season Starting At SCHS

The Stephens County High School volleyball team is starting up a new season.

Last week, the Lady Indians lost in a close match to Eastside High School 25-18 and 25-15 and then lost to East Hall High School 25-15 and 25-14.

Today, the Lady Indians open the season at White County against White County and Rabun County.

This is the second season of full varsity competition for the Lady Indians.

Head Coach Michael Thomas said this year’s team is a mix of both experienced and inexperienced players.

“We have five seniors on our team,” said Thomas. “We are looking forward to getting started and seeing where we are at in our region.”

Stephens County will start Region 8-AAAA play on August 30 in Jefferson against Jefferson and Madison County.

Thomas said the region will provide a lot of tough competition.

“We are in a new region,” said Thomas. “There are six teams in our region. All of them have more experience then we have, so we are just going to have to battle each game within our region, playing the top teams in the state.”

Most of the Lady Indian volleyball matches are tri-matches.

Thomas said he encourages people to come out to matches to support the girls.

After today, the Lady Indian volleyball team will be on the road Thursday at Johnson High School to face both Johnson and White County.

Then on Saturday, Stephens County will host an all-day round robin tournament at the Currahee Arena starting at 9 a.m.

Seven other teams, including three from South Carolina, will participate in Saturday’s tournament at the Currahee Arena, which is the first big volleyball tournament Stephens County has hosted.

Another tournament is set for September 17 for the Junior Varsity, which will include six teams.
