Qualifying for the Lavonia City Council Post 1 seat is over and only two people have come forward to run in that special election race.

Qualifying ended at 4:30p Wednesday with Courtney Umbehant and Nora Chambers the only two candidates to throw their hats into the ring.

Umbehant and Chambers are running to fill the seat left vacant with the passing of City Councilman Don Canady earlier this month.  Canady passed away with two and a half years still left in his term.

Chambers is Vice-president and Branch Manager at Athens First Bank & Trust in Lavonia. Chambers also serves as the Chair of the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority.

Umbehant is the Managing Director for the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home.  He also serves as chair of the Lavonia Planning and Zoning Commission.

Voters will cast their ballots at Lavonia City Hall on June 16th from 7a to 7p.

Early voting will begin May 27th and run through June 12th at the Franklin County Board of Elections Registrations office in Carnesville.

Anyone who wants to vote in the special city election but is not registered, may register at the elections office in Carnesville by close of business May 18th.

Should a run-off be required, the run-off election will take place on July 14th.
