Toccoa celebrates Arbor Day.

The city held its annual Arbor Day program on Thursday at the Schaefer Center in downtown Toccoa.

This year’s guest speaker was Tim Womick, who gave his presentation called “Trail of Trees.”

Womick travels around the country talking about trees after having been inspired to do so after a visit to the Joyce Kilmer National Forest.

He said he wants people to leave his presentation with a different view of trees and an understanding of everything trees provide, from oxygen to paper to shade.

“Just so that after my performance, people will leave this beautiful theater with the notion that they will just look at trees differently,” said Womick. “It is a wonderful world of trees. A world without trees would be a sad one indeed.”

He went on to say that his presentation is about more than just trees.

“The show is based on trees but at the end of the day, it is a holistic view of living,” said Womick.

Womick makes his presentation to people of all ages.

However, he said getting his message out to children is especially important.

“Think about this future,” said Womick. “The trees we plant today, in 25 years, that tree should be massive. If you want to leave a legacy, plant a tree.”

The Georgia Forestry Commission also presented Toccoa with recognition for being a Tree City USA for 10 years.

Arbor Day was started in 1872 in Nebraska.

In Georgia, the third Friday of every February is set aside as Arbor Day, to coincide with the southern tree-planting season.
