Stephens County Humane Shelter to Waive Dog Adoption Fees in July

During the regularly-scheduled meeting of the Stephens County Humane Shelter Board yesterday, June 18, Board members unanimously approved the waiving of adoption fees on adult dogs during the month of July. Only dogs that have been at the shelter for 30 or more days will have adoption fees waived.

The action was taken to help relieve the overpopulation of dogs currently at the shelter. The Stephens County facility, as well as shelters across the state and country, are experiencing high volumes of owner released pets, as well as higher numbers of strays, many of which industry experts say are the result of current economic conditions. In addition, many individuals who adopted pets during Covid 19 are now returning to work and are finding themselves unable to care for the pets they adopted while either working from home, or not working during the pandemic response.

WNEG News spoke with Shelter Board chair Tara Simmons about the shelter’s effort to place more dogs in permanent homes in July.

The Stephens County Humane Shelter, located at 1747 Scenic Drive in Toccoa, is open Tuesday – Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
