Stephens Co. Commission Approves Paving Work

Stephens County will have just over 7 miles of roadway paved after approving a million dollar contract.

Tuesday, Stephens County Commissioners unanimously approved a bid of nearly $1.02 million from Colditz Trucking Co. for paving work.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said the county will be able to pave 7.33 miles of county roads through this contract, part of which is being paid for with state LMIG funds that go towards street work on local roads.

Ayers said the contract will cover paving work on Williams Circle, Old Brookhaven Circle, Kay Road, Fowler Town Road, Hurricane Grove Road, Yearwood Street, East Leatherwood Road, and Law House Road.

County officials said these roads were chosen because they meet the criteria the state has for using LMIG funding.

In other action from Tuesday’s meeting, Stephens County Commissioners approved a purchase by EMS of an ambulance in the amount of $142,007.

County officials said they will pay for the ambulance from the general fund, then use SPLOST money to re-pay the county’s general fund for the purchase.

Also, county commissioners approved a motion to increase the Tax Appraiser Starting Salary to $38,500 for Appraiser III according to scale.

According to county officials, that is designed to help the county better fill open appraiser positions in the Tax Assessor’s Office.

County commissioners also approved a number of planning and zoning requests.

All approvals were unanimous.
