Larry Julian Hart

Larry Julian Hart, 73, of Toccoa, GA passed away on May 31, 2024. He was born on November 22, 1950 on St. Simon’s Island, GA, the son of the late John Hart and Mary Jean Abney.

He grew up in Georgia and graduated from Bleckley County High School (Cochran, GA) in 1968, where he was a standout athlete. He won the Golden Helmet Award (Cochran Football Player of the Year) 1967-1968. Also, in 1968, he held the batting title, where he hit for .443. He was then drafted into the United States Marine Corp where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. He also served in the Army National Guard.

In 1984, he moved his family to Portland, ME from Brunswick, GA. He then began his lifelong journey in the plumbing industry.  In 1996, he joined the UA Local 716 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union and worked extensively throughout the country. The comradery and brotherhood he experienced throughout the trade was very near and dear to his heart. He retired in 2015 to Toccoa, GA. It was there that he spent many of summers as a child with his family.

Larry’s love and wisdom of music and sports was unmatched. He also took great pride in helping young men and women lead productive lives. He introduced us all to John Prine. For that, we will be forever grateful. Larry was so happy to see his beloved Georgia Bulldogs win back-to-back National Championships. His quick-witted personality and long conversations will be missed by all who knew him. Then again, he never met a stranger, so he knew everyone.

Larry leaves behind his daughter Jennifer Hart Watson, son in law Frank Watson, and granddaughter, Lily Gilbert of Portland, ME; his son Joel Hart, daughter in law Samantha Hart and granddaughter Ellie Hart of Cochran, GA; his sister Jan Delp of Weber, TN, his sister Jan Weiss of St. Louis, MO, and his brother Mike Hart of Hammond, LA; as well as many special friends and nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give their sincere appreciation to the Stephens County Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Team, Dr. Merrie Hamby and Dr. Woo, and all who helped in his rehabilitation. He was very grateful to you all.

A memorial service will take place at 1:00 pm Saturday, June 22, 2024 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary, 120 Rose Lane, Toccoa, Ga.  A celebration of life will be held at Cold Mountain at a date to be determined.
