Indian Football Opens Region Play Tonight

Stephens County opens Region 8-AAAA football play tonight on the road.

The Indians are making the trip this evening to metro Atlanta to take on St. Pius.

This marks the first regular-season meeting ever between the two teams. They did scrimmage each other a few years ago in the pre-season.

Stephens County enters region play with a 4-1 overall record after defeating Hart County two weeks ago, 23-6.

Meanwhile, St. Pius is 0-5 on the season. Two weeks ago, St. Pius lost to Lanier, 26-0.

Both teams had last week off to prepare for the region opener.

Indians’ Running Backs Coach Brannon Hulsey said it is a brand new season starting and the first opponent is a good football team.

“Having a week off, we turned up a notch,” said Hulsey. “We went hard. It was not a big break for us. It was an opportunity for us to practice a little bit more. We have to get dialed in. We have a good opponent Friday night, so we want to make sure we are firing on all cylinders.”

Kick-off from St. Pius High School is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on the new 93.1 FM and AM 630 WNEG with the Indian Road Show. Coach’s Corner starts at 7 p.m. and pre-game coverage from the stadium begins at 7:15 p.m.

Indian football is also broadcast online at www.wnegradio.com.

Elsewhere in Region 8-AAAA tonight, Oconee County visits North Oconee. Jefferson and Madison County are both off this week after Jefferson beat Madison County last week, 28-7.

In other area games, Habersham Central hosts Gainesville and Franklin County is at Jackson County. Hart County and Banks County are both off this week.
