GSP Reports 4 Fatalities in Hart County This Year

Four fatalities have occurred on Hart County roads so far this year.

The Hartwell post of the Georgia State Patrol investigated 51 traffic accidents in Hart County in the month of July.

Troopers from post 52 investigated a total of 128 traffic accidents in their territory which includes Hart, Franklin and Elbert Counties.

But out of 128 accidents in 3 counties, all 4 of the fatalities occurred in Hart County according to GSP Post Commander Sergeant Al Whitworth.

We had 3 in an eight day time frame and they were all in Hart County. Actually, two weeks prior to that we had Mr. Leverett, who passed away in a motorcycle accident that he was involved in back in June. So we’ve actually had four and that is actually the first four that we’ve had all year in Hart County and they all came right there together.” said Sergeant Whitworth.

Sergeant Whitworth says there are varying reasons that caused those accidents.

There has been a combination of different contributing factors in those accidents. We had one that was driving under the influence, we’ve had some that were related to distracted driving which is what we’ve been trying to reach to the public and enforce.” said Whitworth.

According to data from the Governors Office of Highway Safety since 2010 Hart County and Stephens County has averaged just over 4 fatal crashes per year on their county roads, Franklin County 5, and Habersham County nearly 8.

In their efforts to cut down on accidents and fatalities, the Troopers of Post 52 have issued 654 citation in July as well as 899 warnings.
