GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Toccoa

Moments ago, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a press release regarding the manhunt and officer-involved shooting in Toccoa today.

Following is a verbatim copy of the press release:

At the request of the Toccoa Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Toccoa, Georgia. Montavious Cantrell Winkfield, age 37, of Toccoa, is wanted in connection to this incident. No officers were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates on Monday, July 1, 2024, at about 2:10 p.m., Toccoa PD officers stopped a vehicle near Diagonal Street, Toccoa, GA.  Winkfield got out of the vehicle and began shooting at the officers.  An officer fired a gun at him, and he ran away.  Winkfield is still on the run.

The Toccoa Police Department has taken warrants for Winkfield for two counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement officers.   Law enforcement is working to find him and take him into custody.

This investigation is active and ongoing.  Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.
