Franklin Co. BOC Tables Voting Districts For Now

By MJ Kneiser, WLHR Radio, Lavonia

There will be no question on the November ballot regarding whether Franklin County should change how it elects its county commissioners.

At a recent work session, Franklin County Commissioners heard from local resident Paul Withers.

He wants to change the voting process from a countywide election to a district-only election.

Withers said he believes only those living in a district should vote for their commissioner.

However, Franklin County Manager Beth Thomas said there just is not enough time to get the issue on the ballot this year.

Thomas said she consulted with the State Board of Elections and discovered that there is a lot of work and research that has to be done before the referendum can be put on the ballot.

Also, she said Franklin County needs to get a better understanding regarding how many people in the county really want to change.

The Franklin County Commission did not take a vote but, after hearing Thomas’ recommendations, decided to put off the matter for now.
