Eight Killed On Ga. Highways So Far This Holiday

Eight drivers have been killed so far on Georgia highways over the Christmas travel period.

That is according to the latest numbers from the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

To this point, none of those traffic fatalities have occurred in northeast Georgia.

The Christmas holiday travel period started at 6 p.m. Friday and ends at midnight tonight for a total of 78 hours.

Also, the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue to suspend construction-related lane closures on Georgia’s highways and major state routes through 10 p.m. tonight.

The DOT does caution that emergency maintenance-related lane closures or incident-related lane closures could become necessary at any time on any route.

Elsewhere, Stephens County government offices and Toccoa City Hall both remain closed today in observance of the Christmas holiday.

In the city of Toccoa, routes for garbage and recycling scheduled to be picked up today will be picked up on Tuesday, December 27.
