Currahee Campus Student Organization Helping in Community

2014 10-2 HEROES-0011A student organization at the Currahee Campus of North Georgia Technical College takes time to help others.

The members of the Currahee Campus HEROES, or Having Equity Resources and Opportunities Equals Success, organization on the Currahee Campus, are focused on providing support and a sense of community for non-traditional students.

This year, one of the group’s many worthwhile projects is collecting items for the Greenbriar Birthing Center.

The Greenbrier Birth Center is part of the Federal Penitentiary System.

Mothers who are serving time in the system are given the opportunity to go from a regular federal prison to the birthing center from 28 weeks of pregnancy until their child is 12 months old.

The Currahee HEROES will be collecting a variety of non-perishable food such as pasta, canned soups, boxed meals, and macaroni and cheese. Monetary donations are also accepted.

North Georgia Technical College Instructor and HEROES Advisor Leslie McFarlin said everyone makes mistakes in life and if they can show kindness, it may make a difference in the lives of these mothers and their innocent babies.

She went on to say that the students who participate in HEROES have a great heart for helping others, adding she is proud of the North Georgia Tech students and the commitment they show to their community as they work to better their lives through education.
