Clerk of Court Issues Scam Alert

The Stephens County Clerk of Court’s Office is asking residents to watch out for a scam that is making the rounds and has now arrived in Stephens County.

Stephens County Clerk of Court Tim Quick says he received the first report of the scam in Stephens County earlier this week.

Quick said the scam involves someone calling and pretending to be from the Clerk of Court’s Office.

“Basically, the scam says that you missed court, we have a bench warrant for your arrest, and you need to give them a credit card number and pay a dollar amount to get the bench warrant lifted,” said Quick. “I think the person I spoke with said (it was) $300.”

He said he wants to make sure residents understand that these calls are not coming from his office.

“We would never call from the Clerk’s Office about a bench warrant and we certainly would never call from the Clerk’s Office asking for money of any kind, so if you get a call like this, please immediately hang up, call the Sheriff’s Office,” said Quick. “If you can get the number off of Caller ID, please let the Sheriff’s Office know. We do have an open investigation, trying to catch the people.”

Quick said he just wanted to let people know his office would not call someone if they missed a court date or to ask for money.
