Be Careful With Fireworks This New Year’s Holiday

If you are thinking about setting off fireworks to celebrate the arrival of the New Year this weekend, state officials are urging caution to avoid injuries and fires.

Governor Nathan Deal has lifted an order banning fireworks that had been in place because of drought conditions.

With that in mind, Georgia State Fire Marshal Dwayne Garriss is urging residents and visitors to enjoy fireworks safely.

Garriss said the best way to enjoy fireworks is by watching a professional display.

However, he said those wanting to purchase fireworks should do so from a licensed fireworks dealer and observe all state laws regarding the use of fireworks.

Also, he said a number of other safety tips are important to remember when it comes to fireworks.

“We want you to read all of the labels carefully before you light those fireworks and we prefer you have adult supervision,” said Garriss. “Do not let children light fireworks themselves. If you do the fireworks yourself, we would like you to have eye protection. Make sure you have an outdoor area that is clear and under your control. The law has changed to where you cannot do it in public parks or state parks now, so it would be land you own or have control of.”

Other safety reminders include never relighting a firework, having water nearby, and remembering to be very cautious around animals because excitement, noise, and lights can cause fear and stress to the animal.

Garriss said to also be cautious using fireworks in windy conditions.
