Authorities ID Woman Killed By Train Friday in Stephens Co.

Authorities have identified the woman killed when she was hit by a train on Friday night in Stephens County.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley has identified the victim as 36-year-old Olympia Fleming of East Whitman Street in Toccoa.

The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. Friday.

Shirley said Stephens County 911 contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report that a Norfolk Southern Cargo train heading east towards South Carolina had struck a pedestrian near the Stonewall Court bridge.

That is in the area of the Toccoa-Stephens County Airport.

The sheriff said the train engineer said he observed two people, a man and woman, on the tracks and sounded the horn several times.

According to the engineer’s account, the man moved to the other side of the tracks, but the woman, Fleming, was bent down and did not move from the tracks, even after the train sounded its horn and flashed its lights multiple times.

Shirley said Fleming was struck by the left side of the train and was thrown off of the tracks onto the shoulder area.

The sheriff said Fleming died instantly as a result of blunt force trauma.

He went on to say that authorities do not know why Fleming failed to move from the tracks and adds his thoughts and prayers are with the family.
