13 Killed on Ga. Highways Over New Year’s Travel Holiday

The Georgia Department of Public Safety says 13 people were killed on Georgia highways over the New Year’s holiday travel weekend.

The 102-hour New Year’s travel period began at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, New Year’s Eve, and ran through midnight, Sunday, January 4.

Out of those 13 fatalities, the Georgia State Patrol investigated 10 of them. The other 3 were investigated by other local law enforcement agencies.

Last year, the Georgia State Patrol investigated just 1 fatal accident in a 30-hour New Year’s holiday travel period.

No traffic fatalities were reported in the Toccoa post of the Georgia State Patrol, according to the Department of Public Safety.

However, two fatalities were reported by the Hartwell post of the Georgia State Patrol, which just opened up for business on January 1.

The Hartwell post of the Georgia State Patrol is located in the Gateway II Industrial Park and covers Franklin, Hart, and Elbert counties.
