Two deputies treated for Hypothermia after Stephens County man drives truck into Lake Hartwell

Few details have been released regarding a Stephens County man who made several sporadic decisions that led to two sheriff’s deputies being submerged in the frigid water of Lake Hartwell.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the incident occurred Tuesday night, after his office was dispatched to a domestic dispute call.

Shirley says an intoxicated man, whose identify has yet to be released, attempted to set his own house on fire.

The man then left his residence, driving erratically.

However, Shirley says the man’s joy ride ended abruptly after he drove his truck off the Bruce Creek Boat ramp and into Lake Hartwell.

According to Shirley, the man left his house moments before two sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Upon their arrival, the deputies received yet another call from dispatch, this time advising them that the man drove his truck at a high rate of speed into the lake.

The two deputies arrived at the lake, only to see the truck submerged under  water.

The pair of deputies took off their uniforms and dove into the frigid water, where both used their batons to break open the driver and passenger window; however, due to the murky water, the deputies were unable to see inside or enter the truck.

EMS arrived and treated the deputies for hypothermia.

Shirley said EMS used blankets and hot pads to warm the deputies.

The pair was then ordered to go home after treating them at the scene.

At this time, WNEG News is waiting for the complete details; however, more information is expected to be released later today.
