TPD issues 17 citations during July 4th safety checkpoints

In Toccoa-Stephens County, during the Fourth of July weekend, the Toccoa Police Department, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol conducted Safety Checkpoints between the hours of 6 p.m. Friday, July 3 through 2 a.m. Saturday, July 4.

Those checkpoints were held on S. Pond and Collins Road; W. Currahee and Zebulon; Big A and White Pine; E. Tugalo and Hayes; and Hwy 123 E. at Hart County EMC.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize 17 citations were issued.

He says those citations included three for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana; four for DUI/Alcohol; one for DUI/Drugs; one for open container; two for suspended license; two for expired license; two for equipment requirements; one for no license on person; and one for expired tag.

Additionally, Mize says these road checkpoints are an important tool in maintaining the safety of our citizens. They are done randomly throughout the year in conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety initiatives.
