Cache of Guns Found in Vehicle, Driver Arrested

Toccoa police find cache of guns believed stolen out of White County

A Toccoa man is behind bars after police caught him with a cache of weapons they believe were stolen.

It happened Saturday, according to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize.

“Toccoa Police Sgt. Matthew Mealor pulled over a black Kia Optima on Big A Road after receiving a tip that the vehicle may contain the guns,” Mize said. “A check of the driver’s license came back that it had been revoked. After the driver agreed to a search of the car, Sgt. Mealor discovered several handguns and rifles.”

Mize said one of the handguns had the serial number filed off.

The guns recovered included a Ruger mini 14, a Smith & Wesson MP22 handgun, a black Colt revolver, a Ruger 22 pistol, and a Sig Sauer rifle with scope.

The driver, identified as 35-year old Zachary Johnson of Toccoa, was arrested on an active probation warrant from Stephens County.

He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving while license suspended or revoked, and possession of a firearm with altered serial number.

Mize said the guns may be related to guns stolen out of White County, and he said their investigation is continuing.
