Toccoa PD plans additional civilian training events

The Toccoa Police Department recently held two active shooter trainings in the Historic Ritz Theatre.

As part of the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (C.R.A.S.E.) the trainings were designed to encourages civilians to be aware of their surroundings in the chance they are involved in an active shooter situation.

Toccoa Police Department’s Interim Chief of Police Jimmy Mize told WNEG News that the events attracted 100 participants from the community; therefore, Toccoa will soon see more training events.

“We had at right at 100 people total through both classes. Had a good turnout through the business sector and some of the churches, and I was glad we were able to put that information out to the community,” Mize said. “It kind of gave them an overview of what to look for in case something did happen. We had good turnout, we’ve had a lot of people ask us if we were going to do it again, and we are. We’re looking at doing it again sometime in September, we haven’t got a date picked out for that one yet.”

Mize added that the forthcoming events will tackle more topics, with only one addressing active shooters.

“We’re going to do another C.R.A.S.E. event sometime in September, and we’re also looking at doing a foul or bad weather one through GEMA. We’d like to be able to present things to the community, and we hope to be able to do some more a little bit later on.”

WNEG News will provide updates as the Toccoa PD moves forward with developing and scheduling these trainings.
