Toccoa Man Killed in Franklin County Wreck

A Toccoa man has died after a one-vehicle wreck in Franklin County.


According to SGT J.R. Dean, with the Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post, it happened Wednesday afternoon on State Route 59 near One Mile Road.


Dean said a white 2013 Chevrolet Express van was traveling north on GA 59 when it traveled off the east shoulder of the roadway and struck a tree with its front end. “The driver and the three rear passengers were transported to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia with non-life threatening injuries,” he said. “The front seat passenger was trapped in the Chevrolet and was subsequently extricated.”

The passenger was transported to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.


He is identified as 73-year-old Jimmy Tate of Toccoa.


Dean said that due to the various disabilities of the three rear passengers, their names will not be released.


GSP’s Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) responded to the crash scene and will be assisting in the investigation.The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
