Toccoa man arrested during burglary

A Toccoa man was arrested after Stephens County Sheriff’s Deputies caught him during a burglary.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on September 10, at approximately 3:24 a.m. a citizen reported a dark colored Jeep pulling into McGarity’s Starter and Alternator Repair.

Upon arrival, Deputy Cason Johnson observed a male subject behind the shop.

The deputy approached the man, identified as Christopher Maney, padded him down and asked for his ID.

911 Dispatch notified Johnson that Hall County had an outstanding warrant for burglary in the second degree against Maney.

Maney was handcuffed and placed under arrest.

Shirley says, Johnson then noticed that the rear door of the business was partially opened. Once additional deputies arrived, they walked through the business to ensure no one else was inside. Deputies observed several tools had been knocked onto the floor.

911 Dispatch was asked to notify the owner and request that he come to his shop.

Further inspection of the rear door revealed fresh pry marks along the jams.

Once the business owner arrived, he immediately noticed a bucket of tools inside the Jeep that were from his business. The owner also reported that there was cash missing from the shop.

Deputies recovered the cash from Maney’s pocket.

Shirley says his office continues its investigation into Maney as several items in his Jeep were believed to be stolen as well. The Jeep was towed to the Stephens County Jail Impound lot pending a detailed search.

Christopher Austin Maney, 26, of Toccoa was arrested for burglary and for the active burglary warrant from Hall County. He is currently incarcerated in the Stephens County Jail where he awaits a first appearance hearing.
