Toccoa man arrested after fleeing away on bicycle

A Toccoa man was recently arrested after a brief foot chase.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on Aug. 3, investigators with the Sheriff’s Office were in the area of Rumsey Avenue when they observed a male subject, later identified as John Matthew Williams, 39, of Toccoa, riding a bicycle.

As Williams rode past investigators he made eye contact with them and then quickly cut through a yard and then back onto the roadway, then ran through a stop sign.

His actions prompted the attention of investigators who pulled in behind the bicycle going up Davis Avenue in order to speak with Williams.

Shirley said his investigators were able to call out for Williams to stop; but, at this point Williams began to run from law enforcement on his bicycle.

According to the incident report, Williams cut through a grassy area between Davis Avenue and Skyview Lane in attempts to elude law enforcement.

He then jumped the curb and ended up behind the government housing buildings on Morgan Place.

Shirley said this is when his investigators exited their vehicle and gave chase on foot.

Williams was apprehended by investigators in a creek bed located behind Morgan Place.

Following Williams apprehension, investigators located a false container, that resembled a 12-ounce Sprite can, containing multiple bags of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Williams was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and obstruction of law enforcement.

He is currently being held at the Stephens County Jail after his first appearance hearing where the magistrate denied bond.

Williams is awaiting an Aug. 27 Bond hearing in Superior Court due to a previous drug arrest, which he was out on bond during the time of this most recent arrest.
