Toccoa Fire Department find body after extinguishing house fire

Officials confirm the structure fire that occurred on Thursday was fatal.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, officers were dispatched to East Currahee Street for a property retrieval; however, while enroute, the subject called back reporting a fire at the same residence.

On arrival, the officers could not make entry into the home due to the doors being nailed shut from the inside.

When Toccoa Fire arrived, they were able to gain access into the house where they extinguished the fire.

Mize tells WNEG News that a body was discovered inside the residence.

He says the Criminal Investigations Division was called out and the scene was secured until it was turned over to the State Fire Marshall and Stephens County Coroner.

At this time, the identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Based on evidence at the scene it was determined that the death was a suicide.
