Toccoa Commissioner Carter Receives Elected Official of the Year Award

Toccoa City Commission Terry Carter is the recipient of the 2017 American Public Works Association Georgia Chapter Elected Official of the Year Award.

Commissioner Carter received the award at their annual Georgia Chapter Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, July 26th at the historic Jekyll Island Club in Jekyll Island.

Carter said he was very surprised and grateful.

However, he says the award is not his alone.

“I was very surprised,” Carter said Wednesday. “It’s nice to be recognized, but the award actually goes to the staff of the City. They do an excellent job and I appreciate all that they do.”

In his role in public service, Commissioner Carter has overseen and played an instrumental role in countless city projects, including construction bids for a new city pool and pool building, the Streetscape project, as well as renovations at Toccoa’s Historic Ritz Theatre.

As mayor of Toccoa, Commissioner Carter also secured funding for a grant of $100,000 for upgrades at Henderson Falls Park.

Most recently, Commissioner Carter helped to secure another grant for $163,000 to improve recreational opportunities at the Toccoa Lake.

Carter said the City is turning a corner in its revitalization efforts and people are beginning to notice what Toccoa has to offer.

“I hear comments when I’m at different meetings and when I’m out of town. Folks make comments that they see a difference,” Carter explained. “It makes you feel good that we’re headed in the right direction. There’s some visible things that actually lifts the spirits and attitudes of everyone. So I’m pleased to be part of that progress and hope to continue those efforts.”

Carter’s spearheading of the city pool renovation project is credited with the City of Toccoa also receiving a previous American Public Works Association Georgia Chapter Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities.

Additionally, under his direction, the City of Toccoa’s clubhouse also won a Georgia Chapter Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities.
