Teen Indicted in Mother’s Death

A Stephens County grand jury has indicted the teen accused of killing his mother in September.

The grand jury handed down a formal indictment against the teen on Monday.

That indictment charges the teen with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and Aggravated Assault in connection with the death of 46-year-old Kim Lanier on September 29.

Authorities allege that the teen shot and killed Lanier, his mother, on that morning at their Prather Bridge Road residence.

Meanwhile, the Stephens County grand jury also handed down another indictment on Monday.

The grand jury indicted Sidney Portier Fortson of Toccoa on two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, two counts of Obstruction of an Officer, and one count of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.

Authorities alleged that Fortson fled a traffic stop on May 5 at the intersection of Defoor and Pinetree Roads and in the process, struck one Stephens County Sheriff’s Office deputy with his vehicle and trapped a second deputy’s arm in the door of the vehicle as he allegedly sped away.

Fortson initially eluded authorities, but was caught later that day without incident.
