Suspect in Custody in Monday Morning Shooting on Whitman Street
This morning, shortly before 11 a.m., there was an altercation on East Whitman Street at the intersection with Rumsey Avenue.
WNEG News spoke on scene moments ago with Toccoa Chief of Police Jimmy Mize, who said that Brandon Threlkeld, 31, of Toccoa, and Josh Mitchell, 33, of Toccoa, got into an altercation at the Whitman Street address and Mitchell pulled a firearm that he had brought to the residence. During the altercation, the firearm was discharged and Threlkeld was struck behind the left temple and ear.
Josh Mitchell, who was already wanted on several felony warrants in connection with another aggravated assault and domestic situation, was taken into custody slightly after 11:30 a.m. as he was emerging from the woods on Skyview Lane.
Mize told WNEG News that the firearm used in the incident was recovered by law enforcement officials.
At this time, Mitchell is in custody at the Toccoa Police Department and will be transported to the Stephens County Detention Center for processing of the existing warrants and new charges in relation to today’s shooting.
Threlkeld was conscious and talking with EMS personnel when transported, but WNEG News has no further information on his condition.
WNEG News will update this report with any new information as provided by law enforcement officials.
Note: At 1 p.m., WNEG News spoke with Mize regarding information published by out-of-town media saying Threlkeld had been killed, and Mize confirmed that Threlkeld was conscious and speaking when transported from the scene and has not succumb to his injuries.
