Student arrested for bringing Loaded Firearm to SCHS

Early Monday morning, December 1, a 16-year-old male attempted to enter Stephens County High School (SCHS) with a loaded firearm. The weapons detection system inside the school immediately detected the pistol inside the student’s backpack.
Administrators and School Resource Officers (SROs) were quick to respond, and the student was immediately taken into custody without incident. It was learned that the firearm was stolen, and Stephens County Sheriff’s Office investigators responded to further investigate the situation. The student was then transported to the nearest Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC).
The student is being charged with the following felony charges: Theft By Receiving Stolen Property, Carrying Weapons on School Property, and Possession of Handgun by a Person Under the Age of 18 Years. More charges may be pending upon further investigation.
The SCSO is committed to working with the Stephens County School System to keep our schools and community safe. We are thankful for the weapons detection system within Stephens County School, as well as for the swift response of both school administrators and SROs which helped to minimize any further possible threat.
