Stephens County Suffers First Loss at Jefferson
It was a back-and-forth affair until midway through the 3rd quarter between two highly ranked teams Friday night in Jefferson when the Dragons took control and claimed a 45-28 win over Stephens County.
The Indians jumped out to a 14-0 lead. On Jefferson’s 1st possession, Stephens County’s DaVon Swinton intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. The Indians followed that up with an impressive 91-yard drive capped off by a Javin Gordon 4-yard touchdown run on the first play of the 2nd quarter.
Jefferson came back with a touchdown on a Pittman 10-yard touchdown run and a Taylor McCall 32-yard field goal to cut the Indians lead to 14-10 at the half.
The Dragons got great field position to start the 2nd half and took their first lead of the game on a Brett Hemphill 8-yard touchdown run. The Indians grabbed the lead back when Tripp Underwood hit Brock Tankersley with a 43-yard touchdown pass, but Jefferson scored 21 unanswered points on touchdown runs by Dallas Russell and Gavin Markey, and a touchdown pass from Markey to Hemphill.
The Indians added a touchdown early in the 4th quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Underwood to Gordon to move to within 10 but that was as close as they would get when Hemphill scored his 3rd touchdown of the night on a 67-yard run with less than 2 minutes to go.
Jefferson improves to 3-1 on the season. Stephens County suffers the first loss of the season to fall to 3-1 and will return home to face Oconee County next Friday night.
