Stephens County Sheriff’s Office to host Citizens Firearms Academy 

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office – Georgia reports that it will be hosting a two-day Citizens Firearms Academy for Stephens County residents on May 9-10, 2025, at the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Training Center.

This eight-hour course is intended to enable residents of Stephens County to become familiar with the firearms they own or may purchase in the future. The Citizens Firearms Academy is free to all participants who qualify and are approved (see flyer for requirements).

The Citizens Firearms Academy will be hosted at the SCSO Training Center which is located at 1605 Scenic Drive, Toccoa, GA 30577. The class consists of a 4-hour classroom lecture/training session on Friday, May 9, beginning at 4 p.m. It will be followed by a 4-hour practical skills application on the firing range Saturday morning, May 10, beginning at 8 a.m. Upon completion of the class, participants will receive a certificate and a gun lock.

“We believe it is the responsibility of every gun owner to be as educated and as safe as possible,” said Training Division Captain Stephen Stewart. “This course is designed for anyone with an interest in firearms, their safe handling, and the safe storage of guns, as well as an understanding of Georgia gun laws and the opportunity to enhance their shooting skills.”

All participants are required to bring the following:

– Personal weapon (NO .22 caliber weapons or cowboy action revolvers allowed)

– 100 rounds of ammunition for your weapon

– Safety glasses and ear protection

– Front-billed ball cap

– Holster and sturdy belt (holster must be designed to securely retain the firearm during movement such as bending or sitting)
