Stephens County Planning Commission tables Rezoning of Proposed PUD

A proposed 38,000-square-foot Planned Unit Development (PUD) was tabled by the Stephens County Planning Commission on Tuesday, October 7. Stephens County Planning Commission Chairman Scott Stroud explained that concerns over the increased amount of traffic that the PUD would create on Memorial Drive required more time to gather information before a rezoning could be recommended.

The mixed-use development of 169 single-family homes, retail, and commercial space was discussed for a lengthy amount of time with the developer and engineer of the proposed PUD speaking in favor of the rezoning and those living near the development speaking against it.

Increasing traffic on Memorial Drive was the main concern for residents.

The engineer said he would speak with the Georgia Department of Transportation about having a traffic study conducted.

The Planning Commission is a recommending Authority for the Stephens County Board of Commissioners, so by tabling the rezoning, no recommendation will be submitted.

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners hears Planning Commission recommendations on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse.
