Stephens County-LaGrange Will Decide Things Thursday

The Stephens County Indians and LaGrange Grangers will face off in a 3rd and deciding game Thursday afternoon in Toccoa in the 1st round of the AAAA Baseball State Playoffs.

The two teams split a doubleheader on Wednesday night with LaGrange taking game one 6-3, and the Indians winning game two 12-3.

In game one, the Grangers took advantage of 4 Stephens County errors and out hit the Indians 10 to 6 to get the win. LaGrange led 5-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th when the Indians finally got on the board. The Indians cut the lead to 5-3 after 5 innings, but that was as close as they would get. Cayden Maxwell, Davis Swenson, and Ridge Adams had 1 RBI each. Ben Hobbs scored 2 runs pinch running for Swenson and Jordan Page, and Dawson Sorrells scored the other run.

Davis Swenson took the tough loss to fall to 6-3 on the season. Mathew Morgan got the win for the Grangers.

In game two, LaGrange scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead 3-0, but Stephens County scored the next 12 for the 12-3 win.

The Indians tied the game in the top of the 3rd inning when Sorrells walked, Maxwell singled, and Swenson walked. Sorrells scored on a balk call, and Maxwell and Swenson scored on Isaiah Martin’s 2-out 2-RBI single.

The Indians scored 4 more runs in the 4th inning. Carson Brock doubled, Ben Hobbs had a bunt single, Sorrells reached on a fielders choice, Eli Wenger walked to load the bases, Maxwell singled home Hobbs, Sorrells and Wenger scored on a wild pitch and balk, and Maxwell scored on Swenson’s sacrifice fly RBI.

The Indians stayed in rhythm with 5 more runs in the 5th inning. Cole Snyder singled, Brock reached on an error, Snyder scored on a wild throw by the Grangers catcher, Sorrells and Wenger walked to load the bases, Maxwell picked up his 2nd RBI of the game when he was hit by a pitch scoring Brock, and Swenson cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double.

Sorrells picked up the complete game win on the mound for the Indians allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking 4. Sorrells improves to 5-3 on the season. Jake Cardwell took the loss for LaGrange.

The two teams will meet in the deciding game Thursday afternoon at 1 P.M. at the Reservation. Airtime on WNEG is scheduled for 12:45 P.M.
