Stephens County hosts Union County in Varsity Football Home Opener Tonight (Sept. 4)

By Ken Brady

The Stephens County High School Varsity Football Team has the home opener at The Reservation tonight, September 4, as they welcome the Union County Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Indians will be looking for their first win of the season after opening the season with losses on the road to Gilmer County and Habersham Central. Union County is also 0-2, losing to White County last Friday night in overtime, 20-14.  Union County is coached by Stephens County native and former Indian assistant coach, Rob Stowe. This is the first meeting in football between Stephens County and Union County.

Last night on the Crunch Time radio program, Indians Special Teams Coordinator Gordon Thigpen said both teams will be giving their best effort to try to pick up their first win.

“They’ve got guys on that staff that are very familiar with Stephens County. The Head Coach Rob Stowe, that’s a name everybody knows, so he’s very familiar with us. There’s some other coaches on that staff that are familiar with us. They obviously haven’t had the season they’ve wanted so far either. They’ve had some injuries. Their QB got hurt the first play of the season, I think, and so, they’re doing what good coaching staffs do, they’re figuring out ways to work with what they’ve got. They’re going to throw a lot at us because they’re trying to get their win too. We’re just hopefully going to beat them to it.”

93.1 FM & AM-630 WNEG will begin our coverage tonight with the Indian Tailgate Show live from the stadium at 5:30, followed by Coach’s Corner at 7, and pre-game at 7:15.

You can also listen online at wnegradio.com and on the free WNEG Radio app.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early tonight for the induction of 6 individuals into the Stephens County High School Athletic Hall of Fame during pre-game ceremonies.

In other area games tonight:  Franklin County travels to Madison County, Hart County hosts Cedar Shoals, Elbert County hosts Commerce, White County plays at Lumpkin County, Habersham Central travels to Monroe Area, Banks County hosts East Jackson, and Rabun County is on the road to Dawson County.
