Stephens County 4-H’ers take home 35 awards at district competition

A group of Stephens County Cloverleaf 4-H’ers recently took home 35 awards during the 4-H District Project Achievement event in South Jackson.

There were 11 counties represented, and 320 competitors during the district-wide competition.

Stephens County 4-H Agent Susan Yearwood says this year, Stephens County had 55 4-H’ers participating at Cloverleaf District Project Achievement, and the Stephens County 4-H delegation received 35 individual district project awards.

According to Yearwood, “it takes a lot of hard work and practice for each young person to prepare for this event.”

Each fifth grade 4-H’er created a 4-H project, which consisted of two- to three-page report and a visual aid.

According to Yearwood, there were 300 4-H projects judged on the school level at 4-H Project Fair, then the 1st place winners were invited to attend District Project Achievement.

The district 4-H competition is an oral competition where the 4-H’ers give an illustrated talk or presentation on a topic of interest.

The 4-H’ers presentation is composed of a 4- to 6-minute speech and a tri-board or poster for visual effect.

4-H’ers choose from over 50 project areas for their presentation.

Yearwood says that most people tend to think that 4-H is just cows and cooking; however, she says it’s much more.

Today’s 4-H projects include International, Target Sports, Computer Science, Robotics, Creative Stitchery, Public Speaking, and Interior Design just to name to a few.

Competition for Cloverleaf 4-H’ers end at district competition; but Yearwood says it prepares them for more advance competition as they get older.
