St. Pius Gets Doubleheader Sweep of Indians

Last Tuesday the Stephens County Indians baseball team traveled to Atlanta and shutout St. Pius. On Friday, it was the Golden Lions turn to travel to Stephens County and they brought their bats with them.

St. Pius banged out 30 hits in the doubleheader on Friday at the Reservation and left with a pair of wins.

In game one, St. Pius had 14 hits to roll to an 8-4 victory. The Golden Lions led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th when Cayden Maxwell singled and scored on Davis Swenson’s double. St. Pius would score 2 more in the 5th inning, but the Indians came back with 2 of their own in the bottom of the inning when Jordan Page reached on an error and Cole Snyder and Maxwell had back to back doubles. St. Pius added 2 more runs in the top of the 7th inning, and the Indians scored their final run when Dawson Sorrells singled and scored on Maxwell’s ground ball out in the bottom of the 7th.

Gabe White took the loss for the Indians to fall to 2-3 on the season. White pitched 4 innings and gave up 4 runs on 9 hits and had 4 strikeouts. St. Pius pitcher Will Tippett got the win.

In game 2, St. Pius scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st and never looked back defeating the Indians 10-2.

St. Pius had 16 hits in the game. Stephens County pulled within 3-1 after one when Sorrells singled, went from 1st to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a Maxwell ground ball out. The other run came in the 3rd inning when Snyder scored on an Isaiah Martin single.

Sorrells took the loss for the Indians and now has record of 2-2.

Stephens County is now 1-2 in Region-8 and 8-8-1 overall. St. Pius improves to 2-1 in the region and 5-12 overall.

Elsewhere in Region-8 North Oconee completed a sweep of Madison County winning 15-8 and 15-4 on Friday.

Stephens County will venture outside of the Region this week when they travel to Elbert County on Tuesday. Airtime is scheduled for 5:20 P.M. with first pitch at 5:30 P.M. on WNEG.
