Taking a look at our Stephens County student athletes this week:
First, a reminder that the Stephens County Indians football team has a bye week this week and there will be no Friday Night football game. However, you can still join Ted, Mack, & Ken for WNEG’s Crunch Time tonight from Captain Ds at 6 p.m.
Alana Thurmond drove in four runs on two hits to lead Stephens County Middle School Lady Rebels past the Madison County Lady Mustangs, 9-1, on Monday.
Kacey Wallace struck out 16 batters on the day, one of them her 100th strikeout for the season. She gave up zero hits and one run over six innings while walking five.
Madison County got on the board in the first inning after drawing a walk, scoring one run, then Alana Thurmond grounded out, which helped the Lady Rebels tie the game at one in the bottom of the third.
The Lady Rebels scored in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits to take the lead, 6-1. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Alana Thurmond that drove in two.
Stephens County accumulated eight hits in the game, with Kenzie Thomas getting two of the team’s six walks in the game.
WNEG News will recap the Lady Indians’ final regular-season games as soon as stats are available. The Lady Rebels are the number one seed going into the region tournament on Monday. They will play at 4:45 p.m. against the winner of the 4 and 5 seed game in Hart County.
In other High School Sports, the Stephens County Lady Indians volleyball team picked up a win last Thursday. The team traveled to Tallulah Falls High School and won against Lakeview Academy in 2 close games with identical scores, 30 to 28. The Lady Indians came up short against Tallulah Falls in 2 games, 25 to 6 and 25 to 12. The Lady Indians traveled to Hebron Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 17. WNEG Sports will provide a recap of that game as soon as stats are available.
Also, On September 12, the Stephens County High School Cross Country team had a standout performance at the meet hosted by Jefferson High School. Nearly every runner achieved a personal best.
Leading the boys’ team was senior Lucas Thompson, who made a remarkable breakthrough, running his first sub-20-minute 5K with an impressive time of 19:24, finishing in 30th place. Thompson, who has been a dedicated runner for all four years at Stephens County, reached a long-standing personal goal, setting the tone for an inspiring day.
The boys’ team delivered several standout performances:
Brysen Finney: 21:31, 56th place
Gerri Setren: 21:58, 60th place
Jake Cawthon: 22:11, 61st place
Garrett Krouss: 22:19, 62nd place
Josh Perez: 23:29, 68th place
Josiah Purser: 23:34, 69th place
Tucker Fuller: 23:36, 70th place
Joseph Sharp: 23:46, 73rd place
Clark Sanders: 24:35, 77th place
In the JV division, Gabriel Hodge finished 35th with a time of 25:58, while Evan Hendrix and Bryce Yawoski clocked in at 26:44 and 27:03, respectively.
The girls’ team also showed grit and determination, with Sayde Gibby leading the charge, finishing 50th with a season-best of 28:52.
Avery Sosebee, Alexis Holland, and Madeline Helton rounded out the team’s effort, each pushing hard to improve their times.

Stephens County Cross Country will be hosting the Reservation Run today, Sept. 19, with the first race starting at 5 p.m.
