South Carolina man indicted for August 2018 homicide

An Anderson, South Carolina man was indicted in Stephens County on two counts of homicide last week.

The Stephens County Grand Jury indicted 33-year-old Kenneth David Epps with two counts of first degree homicide by vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, drugs not in original container, failure to maintain lane, too fast for conditions and reckless driving.

According to the indictment, the incident occurred on August 30, 2018.

The Georgia State Patrol issued a completed report of the incident in September, which reported that Epps was driving, a 2003 Ford Taurus, in the southbound lane of Avalon Road when he crossed the centerline and left the roadway.

Epps’ vehicle continued traveling south through a small field, striking multiple trees and bushes.

His vehicle came to rest after hitting John Milton Cantrell, 80, of Toccoa, who was in a private yard on his riding lawn mower.

The impact ejected Cantrell from the lawn mower, throwing him in the path of Epps’ vehicle.

When Troopers arrived on scene, they discovered Epps to be under the influence of alcohol.

He was then arrested and taken to the Stephens County Jail.

According to the indictment, Epps has plead not guilty.
