SCMS announces Two New Coaches
By Ken Brady
In Stephens County Middle School (SCMS) sports, two coaching changes have been announced for the upcoming school year. As WNEG reported a few days ago, long-time Rebel Head Football Coach Matt Miller has resigned to take an assistant football coaching position at the high school. Phoenix Roberts, who has served as an assistant football coach for 6 years under Miller and also served as the Rebels’ boys’ basketball coach, has accepted the head football coaching position. Roberts says he knows he is following a great tradition at Stephens County Middle School Football.
Since he is taking over the Rebels football program, Roberts is giving up coaching boys’ basketball. That position has been turned over to John LaFevers. Listeners to WNEG’s broadcast of Indians and Lady Indians basketball will be familiar with LaFevers’ voice, as he has served as our Color Analyst for the past 2 seasons. LaFevers entered public education in 2016 at Rabun County as the assistant basketball coach. Then he came to Stephens County, where he served one year as the Lady Indians basketball assistant, followed by 3 years as the head volleyball coach. This school year is the first year he has not coached a sport, and LaFevers says he is excited to be coaching basketball again.
