SCHS Sports Update for Feb. 21
The Stephens County tennis teams remained undefeated with decisive wins over Elbert County on Tuesday.
The Lady Indians and Indians teams won all 10 matches. Both teams swept all 3 singles and both doubles matches to record the third 5-0 shutout of their season. Both teams improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Indians and Lady Indians return to region play today, Feb. 21, at Franklin County in Carnesville. Matches begin at 4 p.m.
The boys and girls Varsity Indians Soccer teams will also play today as they head to Madison County High School, with the girls game starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Also, the Stephens County High School Track Team traveled to Chestatee High School in Gainesville to compete in the first meet of the year on Tuesday, Feb, 18, where team members recorded 14 personal bests and one freshman record was broken when Andrew Maybery broke the school freshman record in boys shot put with a throw of 38 feet.
Carley Funderburke finished 2nd in Girls Discus with a throw of 80 feet 10 inches. Oraiya Wingster finished 4th in Girls Discus with a throw of 77 feet 11 inches. Kashon Gibson finished 2nd in the boys 100m with a time of 11.54 seconds. Hallee Shirley finished 4th in the 100m with a personal best time of 13.36 seconds. She also finished 4th in the 200m with a time of 27.97 seconds.
The Indians Track Team will compete again on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Franklin County High School, with events starting at 4 p.m.
The Stephens County Indians Baseball team, who are now 4-0 after beating West Hall 6-4 on Wednesday, will not play at home again until next Friday, February 28, when they will host Habersham, with first pitch at 5:55 p.m.
Until then, they will be on the road, first participating in the Patrick Mayfield Baseball Tournament at the Habersham Central baseball field, where they will take on West Hall again at 1:30 p.m. and then face Habersham Central at 4:30 p.m., with both games being aired on WNEG Radio and wnegradio.com and the WNEG app starting at 1:15 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 22. Currently, both the Habersham Central Raiders and the West Hall Spartans carry a 2-2 record on the season.
